LACP Photo Book Competition

I have the pleasure to be the first to formally announce the first Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) photobook competition. I may have a little insider knowledge of this new book event as I am one of the two book judges (Gerhard Clausing, Associate Editor, PhotoBook Journal being the other), helped design the competition and the book competition is being sponsored by this magazine. Cool!

The selected books will have two exhibition opportunities; first exhibit is during the LACP 2019 EXPOSURE Weekend in early September and then a month long show at the LACP gallery in Los Angeles. Maybe some of these winning photobooks will subsequently be reviewed here; we are making no promises but the chances are good.

As in past book competitions that I have juried it is a wonderful opportunity for me to see some creative and interesting books that I might not otherwise so I am pretty excited about this opportunity. One aspect to consider; this is a tight time line. So if you have an artist book in the works you want to have considered, you need to pull it together really quick. Tick Tock.

Deadline for Submission: Thursday, August 8th, 2019
Notice of Acceptance: Thursday, August 29th, 2019
Show Opening: Friday, September 13th, 2019 during 2019 Exposures (Marina del Rey)
Show Dates: September 13th – October 16th, 2019 at LACP gallery (Los Angeles)

Information from LACP: “The Los Angeles Center of Photography is pleased to announce its first Photo Book Competition. Prize winners and selected books from each category will be exhibited during the Portfolio Walk on Friday, September 13th of EXPOSURE Weekend. The books will be on exhibition and for sale during EXPOSURE Weekend September 13–15, 2019 at the Hotel MdR, and will be on view at the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) in Hollywood (Los Angeles) from September 16–October 16th”.

“Now in its 5th year, the EXPOSURE Weekend celebrates photography in all forms and includes portfolio reviews, workshops, seminars, panel discussions and networking events. This is an incredible opportunity to reach an audience of photo book lovers and collectors in Los Angeles and environs, and to have your book featured on our website, social media and other marketing platforms”.

Two Book Competition Categories:

1) Self-published (blurb, lulu etc) and all hand-made and artists books

2) Published works from any commercial publisher (includes Indie publications)

Prizes

1st Prize and two Honorable Mentions from each category will be honored at the EXPOSURE Weekend and featured in our newsletter and on social media.

In addition, the jurors will pick 15–20 exemplary Photo Books to be displayed during the Portfolio Walk at EXPOSURE Weekend and at the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) gallery. Photographers will be notified of their acceptance in the Photo Book Exhibition. Winners need not be present.

Eligibility and Guidelines

LACP’s Photo Book competition is open to all photographers and publishers in the United States and abroad. Entrants may submit books of any size, format, or style. Submitted books may be self-published, such as from an on-demand service such as Blurb, Lulu, Apple Books, etc.; have been hand-made/hand-bound or created by a publishing company; Dummy books will be accepted, though published books are preferred.

Submissions will be judged on book design, including page layouts, text, cover, strength of the photography, quality of the book as an object, and emotional impact of the overall book. All judging is at the complete discretion of the jurors and all decisions are final.

All submissions must be original works created by the submitting photographer or be submitted by a publisher who has permission to submit the work.

By entering, the photographer or publisher warrants that the submission does not infringe any third party’s rights, and that you have obtained all necessary permissions from any third party. Once entered, all Submissions are final; no changes or edits may be made to your book.

Acceptance Notice
All entrants will receive an email from LACP with a list of artists selected for the show. The selected images and artists’ names will also be posted on LACP’s website.

Entry Fee

· $25 for 1 book (Members), $35 (Non Members)

· $35 for 2 books (Members), $40 (Non Members)

· $40 for 3 books (Members), $50 (Non Members)
