Your editorial team for The PhotoBook Journal, me and Associate Editor Gerhard Clausing, had a table and an opportunity to meet and discuss photobooks at Photo Independent on the weekend of April 21 – 23rd, 2017. This including some more time with the Photo Independent book competition submissions and winners (look for the 2018 book competition announcement at the end of the year), discussions with photographers about book submissions and on Sunday morning I provided a walking photobook curatorial discussion about the book competition winners.
One photobook highlight for both Gerhard and me was spending time with Roger Ballen, the featured photographer of Photo Independent. Roger and I had been trading emails about his photobook publications for many years, so this was a great for both Clausing and me to spend a little time talking with him about his books (also having him sign some of his books that were in my collection). Clausing will be reviewing Ballen’s recent release The Theatre of Apparitions on the journal later this month.
We still have a few more of the Photo Independent photobook submissions to feature and we expect to publish these by the end of this month. One book we will not be reviewing is the artist book that is an honorable mention by Jason Reimer, 197_, below, which might be more of a book dummy. The good news that Jason is now working on a plan to publish this book, so more news about his progress later this year. We do wish him good luck for this publication venture!
Cheers!
Douglas
